Millwork & Cabinetry
The intricate details of millwork & cabinetry are critical to the function and circulation of any floor plan design. These details contribute significantly to the 3-dimensional development & interior architecture. Millwork details- from window casing & crown molding, to cabinet door styles & hardware- contribute to both the function and aesthetics of any space.
Some things to consider…
Draw attention? Or make disappear?
Whether you prefer understated details or glamorous statement pieces - lighting fixtures are like the perfect buttons on a dress or an overcoat, or jewelry you may never notice. But these detail complete the ensemble- with or without making a fashion statement. You decide.
Maintenance matters.
Marble’s porous nature makes it a high-maintenance material for horizontal surfaces, including counters & floors. A heavy use space like a master bath is subjected to constant foot traffic, and the oils and chemicals found in many skincare & cleaning products can stain and damage the soft natural material. So I often recommend a quartz material for counters, & porcelain tile for floors. For the same reasons, I rarely recommend marble for kitchen countertops. (Although, I do have crema marfil marble in my own kitchen- and I find beauty in the patina of use.)
Quartz is more durable and more easily maintined, though it is often more expensive than many marbles & granites. It is manufactured to replicate natural stones like Statuary Marble or French Limestone, among many others.
Think through every task.
How you plan to use a space factors into every cubic foot. In this office, for example, only small meetings will occur. Large open counter spaces - at standing height - provide ample space to lay out drawings and resources during the design process. Adequate lateral filing and concealed shelving allows for storage of everything from construction documents to invoices & architectural material samples.
